So what is self-esteem? Simply put, Self-Esteem is what we think, feel, and believe about yourselves.

While Self-Worth is the recognition, you are a valuable human being, worthy of love. Self-Confidence, on the other hand, is the degree to which you trust in yourself and your ability to deal with challenges, solve problems, and engage successfully with the world. These concepts combined determine the degree to which you feel lovable, valuable, worthy, and confident in your abilities.

How does self-esteem impact your life?

A healthy sense of self, having positive self-esteem, has a tremendous influence on how we live our life. Your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about yourself and your abilities, influences how your decisions as well as how you view others and the world.

Viewing yourself through a positive lens can help you pursue and create the life you desire. It also has a significant influence on your overall health and well-being.

For example, your level of self-esteem could be the determining factor in deciding to go to college or choosing your career path, apply for a job or go for that big promotion, try a new challenging hobby, or asking out your crush!

Do you really want low self-esteem to stand the way of achieving your dreams and living a full, joyful life? ...I didn't think so!

Self-Esteem is not fixed but rather viewed on a continuum. Meaning, you can improve your self-esteem!

How does counseling help me improve my self-esteem?

If you struggle with low self-esteem, chances are you've developed a negative internal dialog or engage in negative self-talk. Counseling can help you challenge your hurtful and destructive self-talk, learning to speak to your inner self with compassion. I know, it sounds a little silly or maybe a bit mother-earthy-hippy-dippy, which is fine, but maybe not you? It's not as bad as it sounds. Research has demonstrated changing negative self-talk is vital to improve your self-esteem.

Being self-compassionate means we are kind and forgiving to ourselves, and that we avoid being harsh or overly critical of ourselves. Self-compassion can lead us to a healthy sense of self-esteem.
