You may be asking yourself, "Can I afford counseling?"

My question is, Can you afford NOT to? What are you worth?

Insurance: Understanding How It Works

As a therapist I tend to adopt a more humanist approach which strives to depathologise the human condition. In other words, I believe first and foremost you are a person, not a diagnostic label. Insurance companies ask counselors to provide a diagnosis. This diagnosis indicates why you are seeking treatment. While at times these diagnostic tools can be useful to inform treatment it can also attach unnecessary labels which can create long lasting effects and impact your current and/or future treatment.

Insurance companies can dictate what types of treatment or interventions they will choose to cover and the length of treatment. As a therapist, I believe you should determine your course of treatment, not insurance companies.

In addition, I value YOUR right to privacy and confidentiality. I believe it is the cornerstone to developing trusting healthy therapeutic relationship.  It is a vital part of the therapeutic process as well as your right as an individual. By accepting insurance I would be required to share your health information with a third party.

It is also important you are aware any diagnosis submitted to your insurance company will become a part of your permanent record.

Meeting you where you are.

People choose to utilize insurance for a variety of reasons. You may need to utilize insurance out of necessity or maybe you just wish to take advantage of your benefits.

Utilizing Insurance is your individual choice. I do utilize the DSM-IV, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, when necessary in order to provide you with all of the information you may need to secure any reimbursement for services through your insurance company. If you wish to utilize your insurance you may submit a receipt for services rendered in order to receive reimbursement from your insurance provider. This claim would be considered an “out of network” provider. Please be aware that all, some, or none of these services may be covered and/or reimbursed.

Prior to your first session please let me know if you have any questions and/or if you plan to utilize your insurance.
